Brief snippets of my work at Osmo

About Osmo

Osmo is an award-winning educational augmented reality video game company that changes the way children (ages 3-10) interact with games by combining physical interactions with digital experiences.

My Role

I led generative and evaluative research studies and collaborated directly with designers and engineers to drive effective game design and product strategy. I worked on products that provide healthy screen time to our most challenging critics, children, while meaningfully involving and empowering parents and teachers.

Math Wizard Series

Challenge

Prior to Math Wizard, Osmo offered roughly 4 math games. Existing Osmo users have expressed interest in more math games. Is it worthwhile to develop new math games, or should we focus our attention on other subjects?

Outcome and My Role

Math Wizard, a series of self-paced, curriculum-inspired games that combines hands-on learning with digital adventure, helping children build math confidence and understanding.

I conducted generative research to define the need and desirability for the whole series of new curriculum-inspired math games.

I synthesized beta testing results to recommend design improvements, which led to increased Net Promoter Scores (NPS) for two best selling games.

Little Genius Starter Kit + Early Math Adventure

Challenge

How might we add more educational value to the Little Genius Starter Kit (for 3-5 year olds)?

Outcome and My Role

I led the research that defined Early Math as the primary need for families with 3-5 year olds. I facilitated 50+ playtests and conducted beta testing which drove the development of 2 new games.

Genius Starter Kit + Family Game Night

Challenge

How might we bring families together with Osmo, especially when sheltering in place?

Outcome and My Role

I led the research that defined collaborative math and spelling games as desirable for families. I facilitated 30+ dyad-playtests and conducted beta testing which drove the development of 2 new games.

Communicating research in fun ways

At times, describing the research process that drives the design of new games can often feel boring and dense. To communicate research in fun ways, I often create sketchnotes that readers can scan quickly and stimulate their visual thinking. My sketchnotes are primarily used for Osmo blog posts.
